Art and life: How to make a living as an artist

People love art

It doesn’t matter if we live in a world where people are either concerned with how to survive or with some superficial need imposed by the consumerist society – people do love art and they love to get exposed to any form of it. No matter if it is a photograph, a painting or a sculpture, we like to be surrounded by art on our tables, walls and furniture. Succeeding as an artist in this world full of perverted and twisted minds is quite hard, but this doesn’t mean that you cannot live your dream and try to make your art your main source of income.

Present your art to them

Firstly, you need to present your art to many people – preferably those who enjoy artistic creations. Make an exhibition, where you are going to invite many people and where some pieces of your work will be presented. Chose to present the creations that you are really proud of and you can even give some of them away as a gift.

If you can afford paying the rent for a gallery for a few days, this would be really beneficial for your further progress. The longer the exhibition is open, the more people will hear about you and your work – so, some of them might get interested in buying some of your works.

Get a store

You need to have your art available for potential customers – you can never know when somebody will need a painting or a sculpture. Display all your work in a store – that is, if you can – and try to do that in a good location, where a lot of people pass by on daily basis. Make sure that you put a price on each piece, so that people can get a clue of how much they will need if they wish to acquire one (or several) of them. If you cannot afford a bigger store, then a small one can also serve the purpose – after all, you don’t have to put everything you created here. You can save some of your art to present it online.

  • Get an online store

Making an online store can make things much easier. If you cannot afford a real store, than you can always turn to an online store – or, you can have both if you wish so. You will need to have a photo of your works on your website, with a detailed description of its dimensions and the materials used in production. These photos need to be good-looking, as the quality of them will directly influence your profit. Have them edited by a photo editing company that will make them look even better than they really are.

Invest a little bit in the design and functionality of your website, as it will also influence the decisions of your potential buyers. If it looks serious yet creative, you have a better chance of someone actually looking at what you have to offer.

Affordable prices

As a newbie, you need to have some reasonable prices, no matter how good you think your art is. If you take the risk of asking too much for your work, then you might never sell anything. What you should do is offer prices that are neither too low nor too high. This way, people will be aware that you are someone who appreciates his own art and who is still a down-to-earth artist.

Take orders

Is this something you even considered? Certain people need a painting or a photograph that will match their furniture or walls, or they will simply like to have something in their living rooms that they have seen somewhere. This can turn out to be quite a smart move if you want to earn some money. People will tell you their wishes regarding style and color and you can suggest some of your own ideas. It is hard to find a painting that is going to be precisely as one imagined it, so people like to order a painting done especially for their needs. You can have your own price for this kind of services too.
